Grizzly Bear Ecology Walking Tour

Grizzly Bear Ecology Walking Tour
In autumn, Tweedsmuir Park Lodge is all about bears. One of the season’s standout experiences is stepping into their world with a guide by your side to observe wild grizzlies in their natural habitat.
Trails wind through the mossy, old-growth trees of the Great Bear Rainforest—past towering cedars, along riverbanks, and across soft forest floors rich with life. Guides will point out signs of bear activity like claw marks, day beds, scat, and tufts of fur on rub trees, while sharing insights into grizzly behaviour and how to safely coexist with these incredible animals.
Along the way, you may encounter other wildlife like black bears, mule deer, moose, beavers, mountain goats, bald eagles, and a variety of smaller mammals and birds that thrive in this unique ecosystem.

Who Should Book This Activity?
For guests visiting from late August to mid-October, this is a must-do experience. It offers a rare and unforgettable opportunity to observe grizzly bears in their natural habitat—roaming, foraging, and feeding along the riverbanks as they take advantage of the annual salmon run.
Viewing grizzly bears by raft is a safe and non-intrusive way to witness and photograph natural bear behaviour from a respectful distance. The number of river drifts each day is intentionally limited to reduce our impact on the bears and their environment.
If you’re not staying with us but would like to inquire about availability, please contact us at 1-604-905-4994 or [email protected].
Group Size
All river drifts take place in stable inflatable rafts with 360-degree swivel seats, giving every guest a comfortable, unobstructed view of the riverbanks and surrounding wilderness. Each raft accommodates up to six adults, plus your experienced guide and essential gear. Wherever the bears roam, you’ll have a safe, front-row seat to observe and photograph them in their natural habitat.
Safety & Mobility
Safety is our top priority. Drifts are designed to observe bears from a safe and respectful distance. Before setting out, guests receive a safety briefing on how to act in the presence of bears and what to do if one appears. All guides are trained in swift-water rescue, carry bear spray and radios, and are proficient in their use.
Expect to spend 2 to 3 hours on your feet, walking and standing on uneven terrain. Participants must be comfortable following the guide’s instructions at all times to ensure both safety and a rewarding experience. If you’re unsure about your fitness level or prefer a more relaxed pace, we recommend booking a private tour for added flexibility.
Equipment & What to Bring

What to Expect
Meet your guide at the Adventure Centre steps away from the main lodge. From there, you’ll board a short shuttle ride to the trailhead. After a safety briefing, you’ll head into the forest.
Then the adventure begins. Spend 2–3 hours exploring trails, watching for signs of grizzly bears and other wildlife, with your guide sharing stories and insights along the way.
The tour ends with another quick shuttle ride back to the lodge—just in time for lunch or après on the deck.
