Fly-Fishing in Bella Coola

The Bella Coola Valley is a remarkable location for any fisherman. This is due to the stunning setting. A deep, lush, coastal valley surrounded by towering snowcapped and glaciated mountains. Here fisherman can encounter Grizzly Bears, Deer, Wolves and Eagles at any given moment. The wilderness setting this brings to the angler is very distinctive.

The Bella Coola, the Talchako and the Atnarko Rivers are the main water flows in the valley and these rivers have always had a healthy population of resident and migrating fish stocks. In addition, there are many tributary streams and creeks that run into these two rivers. The Bella Coola and the Talchako Rivers are glaciated which makes the river silty most of the year. The Atnarko River flows through a series of lakes and therefore runs clear, the exception being during spring snow melt or during extreme rainfall.

From the Tweedsmuir Park Lodge you can access excellent water only a short walk away. Or you can drive and walk into many hot spots on both rivers. Although no guide is needed for this activity, we do recommend hiring one of our local guides as they have a wealth of local knowledge and will definitely improve your changes of success.

River Boat Guided Fishing

Simply the best and most enjoyable way to go fishing. With the McKenzie Drift Boat it is possible to access the entire river system. You can fish from the boat as well as stop at all the best fishing holes, including many hard to reach spots. The McKenzie Drift Boats are exceptionally comfortable, and ideal for these rivers. The drift is guided by an expert oarsman with many years of experience fishing these waters.

Fishing equipment and technique depend on the season and fish species. For the Salmon we most often plug, bait or lure fish. For Trout we use lighter gear such as spin casting or fly fishing gear. It is really up to you, your experience and your own technique. Please bring your own equipment, if you prefer, especially if you want to fly fish for Salmon. We do not supply heavy fly equipment.

All fishing equipment is included, however, you need to buy a fishing licence! To save time, you can get it online here, just remember to bring the receipt.
