Cruising the Fjord - See Orcas and Dolphins! Catch Crabs and Shrimp!
The interlinking fjords leading from the Pacific to Bella Coola are the most extensive of its kind in the Americas and one of the most scenic areas in the entire province. The Dean Channel, South and North Bentinck Arm, Burke Channel, Labouchere Channel, and Cascade Inlet are all connected and form hundreds of kilometres of protected waterways. Orca, also known as Killer Whales, dolphins and seals can be encountered at any time during the summer months.
The day starts in the scenic Bella Coola Harbour, which is home to a small, local fishing fleet. The setting is stunning. The snowcapped Coast Mountains tower over head lining our route out into the inlet. Depending on the group size we board either a 8 passenger boat or the larger 12 passenger boat.
Our boat and Captain have been fishing these waters for generations and know all the best spots to set crab and prawn traps. Depending on when you are in the valley, it may even be possible to drop a line and fish for Halibut.
Stops can include: Larso Bay and a visit to the 1,000 year-old giant Cedar Tree, the option for a soak in a natural hotspring over looking the fjord (and a quick dip into the inlet for those hardy enough), as well as a visit to the historic Tallheo Cannery. The cannery was built in the 30's to process and can salmon and operated until the late 50's.
In the afternoon, on the way back to the Bella Coola Harbour, it will be time to pull up the traps loaded with prawns and crab for dinner (if chartering the large boat). These delicious delicacies can then be boiled or barbecued for a dock side feast.
Options are: medium boat (maximum 8 people) or a large boat (maximum 12 people).
Shuttle service to harbour and fishing licence not included, however, we can organise these for you.
