River fishing on the Bella Coola river systems have a long history. These rivers have always had a healthy population of resident and migrating fish stock.
Each season sees a return of all five Pacific Salmon species, as well as the seasonal movements of resident species throughout the river system.
The Bella Coola Valley is a remarkable location for any fisherman. This is due to the stunning setting. A deep, lush, coastal valley surrounded by towering snowcapped and glaciated mountains. Here fisherman can encounter Grizzly Bears, Deer, Wolves and Eagles at any given moment. The wilderness setting this brings to the angler is most distinctive.
The Bella Coola and the Atnarko Rivers are the main water flow in the valley. However, there are also many tributary streams and creeks that run into these two rivers. The Bella Coola River is a glaciated river which makes the river silty most of the year. The Atnarko River is a clear river and usually runs clear. The exception to this rule is during spring snow melt or during extreme rainfall. The Atnarko River tributaries also include many large lakes.
The Tweedsmuir Park Lodge is located on the Atnarko River, inside Tweedsmuir Provincial Park. The lodge was originally built as a sportsman’s lodge for hunting and fishing. The hunting has long faded, but the fishing is still rife with activity.
There are two options to fish these rivers. You can fish by river boat, or by driving to known fishing holes and then walking in.
From the Tweedsmuir Park Lodge you can access excellent water only a short walk away. Or you can drive and walk into many hot spots on both rivers. No guide is needed for this activity. Bring your own fishing gear or rent waders and light fishing equipment at the lodge
By river boat you will access the entire river system, including many hard to reach spots. We use the Mckenzie drift boats which are
exceptionally
comfortable, and ideal for these rivers. Your guides are experts in their field, and have many years of experience fishing these waters.
Note:: All fishing gear is included in these boat drifts.
Fishing equipment and technique depend on the season and fish species. For the Salmon we most often plug, bait or lure fish. For Trout we use lighter gear such as spin casting or fly fishing gear. It is really up to you, your experience and your own technique. Please bring your own equipment, if you prefer, especially if you want to fly fish for Salmon. We do not supply heavy fly equipment.
